Premessa. Un crimine contro l’umanità, comporta delle vittime, che nel caso dei disaparecidos vanno iidentificate in base a testimonianze quando non sia possibile materialmente, l’accertamento delle responsabilità ma anche la ricerca delle motivazioni. Queste ultime spesso sono ideologiche e quindi l’ambito delle responsabilità si allarga a dismisura oltre quello delle responsabilità penali. Inoltre le motivazioni ideologiche hanno una radice non cosciente che va circoscritta con uno specifica ricostruzione storica oltre i fatti e le evidenze accertate.
Il terzo libro di Tulli Figli rubati affronta il tema della violenza che i bambini e i genitori hanno subito durante le dittature nel Cono Sur degli anni 70 :– Lo stato terrorista in clandestinità ha perpetrato un genocidio in nome degli ideali cristiani sotto gli occhi di tutto il mondo che sa e non reagisce. Come afferma Louis Eduardo Duhalte che fu segretario ai diritti umani in Argentina il PROCESO di riorganizzazione nazionale sosteneva la superiorità dell’umanesimo cattolico e di un sistema di valori rispettosi dei dogmi della chiesa cattolica derivati dalla legge naturale , validi per tutti anche per i non credenti. Un uomo senza Dio, si diceva cessa di essere un uomo. Un bambino battezzato è diverso da uno non battezzato ha ribadito recentemente Bergohglio. Di conseguenza i marxisti o supposti tali cessano di essere uomini e si può fare di loro ciò che si vuole. La famiglia è , per gli ideologi del terrorismo di stato, fondata sull’autorità paterna e sul ruolo subalterno della donna relegata alla cura dei figli. Il nucleo familiare sarebbe minacciato di disintegrazione dall’aborto, dal divorzio, e dall’uso di contraccettivi. Il controllo della vita familiare e la regolamentazione dei suoi aspetti riproduttivi ed educativi è al centro della politica repressiva dello stato totalitario, Per il governo militare l’obiettivo della repressione fu il terrorismo, ma dando a quest’ultimo termine una portata che potrebbe comprendere praticamente chiunque. Il Generale Videla ha dichiarato nel 1978 al Times di Londra che “un terrorista non è solo qualcuno con una pistola o una bomba, ma anche qualcuno che diffonde idee contrarie alla civiltà cristiana occidentale. L’intransigenza ideologica che giustifica la crociate ha una lunga tradizione nella Chiesa Cattolica che considerò Mussolini l’uomo della provvidenza e benedisse le truppe mussulmane e la vittoria di Franco e venne a patti con le SS di Hitler. La complicità morale del cattolicesimo con Videla e compagni è solo uno dei tanti episodi storici di collusione con regimi totalitari: i figli rubati e i desaparecidos, fra cui molti preti aderenti alla teologia
della liberazione ne sono stati i terribili i effetti collaterali. Ci sono state complicità dirette della Chiesa Cattolica come quelle che ha dimostrato Verbisky nei confronti di Bergoglio o il caso di preti che parteciparono alle torture e assolsero i voli della morte.
Ci fu una responsabilità della psichiatria o della psicoanalisi in appoggio alla mostruosa politica repressiva dello stato? Da Peron al 1983 L’Argentina fu soggetta, con qualche intervallo, ad una serie di regimi autoritari sempre più violenti durante i quali la psicoanalisi ebbe un eccezionale sviluppo . Si conferma una tendenza che si era manifestata durante il nazismo: Anna Freud ,Ernest Jones credevano che la psicoanalisi potesse sopravvivere in un contesto fascista e per questo furono mantenuti contatti con L’ Istituto di Mattias Goering per la psicotepia. Dopo la guerra un analista che ne aveva fatto aprte e era del molto implicato con il nazismo, emigrò in Brasile.
Nel 1966 sotto la dittatura di Ongania, la psichiatria non fu toccata dalla repressione ma d oggetto di una riforma democratica, appoggiata dal governo che consentì di adottare le comunità terapeutiche di Maxwell Jones . Queste ultime affiancarono i giganteschi ospedali psichiatrici dentro cui si praticavano in modo selvaggio, elettroshock, coma insulinico e cardiazolico oltre all’uso a tappeto degli psicofarmaci. Nelle comunità ci si concentrò sugli aspetti sociali della malattia mentale con l’aiuto della psicoanalisi, dando vita a micro democrazie nel contesto di una società dittatoriale. Nel 1970 prese il potere il generale Levingstone e ci fu una radicalizzazione di posizioni sia della destra che della sinistra. Quest’ultima guadagnò consensi nelle FAP ( federazione argentina psichiatrica) cercando di coniugare il marxismo con la psicoanalisi e aderendo alle posizioni antipsichiatriche del Nord Europa: la malattia mentale non sarebbe stata un’entità reale ma solo il riflesso della violenza e dell’oppressione della società
.Molti psichiatri delle Fap si impegnarono direttamente nella lotta politica abbandonando lo specifico psichiatrico. Dal 70 al 73 l’azione repressiva del governo si intensificò: molti psichiatri furono rapiti e uccisi ed altri licenziati mentre si procedeva alla chiusura delle comunità terapeutiche. Alcune resistettero cambiando semplicemente nome. La repressione non colpì le comunità in quanto tali ma la radicalizzazione politica delle FAP. Da l 1974 a 1983, sotto Isabelita Peron e la successiva giunta militare i regimi autoritari ebbero nel mirino gli psichiatri di sinistra che furono costretti all’esilio come la psicoanalista aderente al partito comunista Maria Langer o rapiti e uccisi da organizzazioni paramilitari di destra le famigerate tre AAA. Sotto Videla il governo militare convertì due ospedali psichiatrici Alejandro Posada e Borda in centri clandestini di detenzione e di tortura sotto la direzione di Ricardo Estéves che aveva promosso la riforma psichiatrica sotto Ongania. Anche se può sembrare paradossale non ci fu un ritorno a una concezione organicistica pura: il governo di Videla, al di là della retorica pubblica, continuò ad appoggiare forme di trattamento comunitario pur avendo licenziato in massa tutti gli elementi della sinistra e rimpiazzati con specialisti provenienti dai ranghi militari. Dagli psichiatri conservatori e dalla stampa popolare la teoria psichiatrica fu usata per dare uno stigma di malattia mentale all’avversario. Nella rivista SOMOS e Para ti alcuni rispolverarono la teoria che le guerrigliere erano psicopatiche.
Non solo il contesto comunitario ridefinito da posizioni di destra contribuì a sostenere il regime ma al di là dei discorsi ufficiali e la condanna di Freud anche la psicoanalisi ortodossa, rimasta su posizioni apolitiche, fu usata per difendere la concezione tradizionale della famiglia. Nel maggio 1976 l’APA ricevette un aiuto in denaro dal ministero della salute per organizzare il congresso di psicoanalisi latino americana.
Per combattere il degrado della famiglia lo psicoanalista Arnaldo Rascovsky dichiarò che i terroristi erano malati mentali ed enfatizzò, alla radio, alla televisione e nei giornali nei quali era onnipresente, la connessione fra delinquenza minorile e il comportamento dei parenti. Nel 1973 Rascovsky aveva pubblicato un libro Il figlicidio in cui sosteneva l’esistenza di una tendenza istintiva ereditata filogeneticamente, ad uccidere i figli: si fa riferimento non a responsabilità politiche ma a un entità metastorica, l’eredità filogenetica che potrebbe essere chiamata anche in altro modo, per es. male radicale. Nel 1949 Marie Langer aveva anch’’essa parlato, in un articolo, di figlicidio, ma dopo la caduta di Peron chiarì che la madre assassina era per lei Evita Peron.
Il libro Il Figlicidio fu profetico in quanto al di là delle stupidaggini pseudoscientifiche che conteneva, coglieva tendenze in atto nella politica argentina.. in effetti la repressione dell’operazione Condor fu una strage degli innocenti, come fu una strage degli innocenti la guerra delle Malvinas voluta dalla paranoia dei militari.
Ma Rascovsky fece di più scrisse un altro libro La vita psichica del feto che fu pubblicato a Buenos Aires nel 77 e che non fu soggetto ad alcuna censura. In tale libro si sostiene una tesi ancora attualissima e molto dibattuta che fa parte della dottrina della Chiesa : nel feto sarebbe presente già un’attività mentale, un Io fatto di immagini innate come affermato da Freud e prima di lui da Platone nel mito della caverna, Un’idea del genere, urta contro le evidenze scientifiche dell’embriologia e della neonatologia e ha un preciso significato politico. Un’antropologia basata sull’idee innate, sull’istinto di morte che è il peccato originale, è incline come la filosofia platonica cui si fa esplicito riferimento nel libro al totalitarismo. Platone e Heidegger si assomigliavano scrisse Hanna Arendt, il primo simpatizzava per Dionisio il giovane tirann di Siracusa, il secondo per Hitler. Dietro la facciata psicoanalitica c’è una concezione religiosa per cui se l’uomo non ha dentro di sè l’anima, o l’Io che dir si voglia fin dall’utero non è uomo. Negare , come fa non solo Raskovky ma la psicoanalisi freudiana in generale, che la capacità di immaginare insorge alla nascita per la fantasia di sparizione e la reazione allo stimolo luminoso significa lasciare l’uomo in balia dell’istinto di morte cioè della pulsione di annullamento. Quest’ultima crea il delirio di essere Dio e di poter disporre della vita e della morte,
Andres Rascovsky figlio di Arnaldo, ex presidente, come il padre dell’ APA, è anche lui un ospite fisso della stampa ma si guarda bene dall’entrare in conflitto con le gerarchie cattoliche. A un giornalista che gli chiedeva, nel 2010, se il papa credendosi l’emissario di Dio in terra fosse delirante egli rispondeva di no poiché una quota di delirio è normale e fa parte delle credenze popolari . In nome di questa normalità delirante, detta civiltà cattolica occidentale e con la benedizione dell’emissario di Dio in terra, si sono commessi, nel corso della storia genocidi o veri e propri olocausti.
Per comprendere a fondo le motivazioni di fenomeni come quelli dei figli rubati e dei desaparecidos nel Cono Sur bisogna gettare lo sguardo su realtà più vicine a noi.. La postfazione del libro di Tulli, scritta da Simona Maggiorelli assolve egregiamente questo compito. Simona Maggiorelli mette in relazione il fenomeno dei ninos rubados e dei decaparecidos nell’operazione Condor con episodi analoghi avvenuti quarant’anni prima nella Spagna franchista.
Il genocidio argentino ha forti analogie con quella franchista del 36-39 non solo nel riferimento all’integralismo cattolico ma nel fatto che i militari e una parte della società insorse contro l’altra cercando di cancellarla dalla faccia della terra in nome dell’anticomunismo. In realtà tutta la spagna progressista e anche solo potenzialmente dissidente fu trucidata. Franco usò sistematicamente il terrore, la tortura, le esecuzioni collettive con sepoltura in fosse comuni e ma sopratutto inventò la pratica dei figli rubati e dei desaparecidos.
Con la benedizione di tutti i vescovi spagnoli nel 1937 e il grande piacere, parole testuali, con cui Pio XII accolse la sua vittoria nel 39. Le atrocità di Franco che gli spagnoli hanno cercato di cancellare dalla propria memoria stendendo su di esse un velo di silenzio, sono riapparse nel Cono Sur: nel 1975 Franco muore e nel 76 la giunta militare va al potere. Pura coincidenza che l’operazione Condor ha lo stesso nome della legione tedesca e italiana che rase al suolo Guernica? Nella crociata antimarxista spagnola la psichiatria giocò un ruolo determinante grazie allo ad Antonio Vallejo Nagera al quale tutt’oggi è dedcata una via di Madrid. Vallejo Nagera era un ufficiale medico africanista che dopo la guerra mondiale fu incaricato all’ambasciata di Berlino. Qui venne a contatto con Walter Gruhle, Julius , Schwalbe e Ernst Kretschmer fra i più illustri psichiatri dell’epoca. Nel 1934 sotto l’influsso delle teorie eugenetiche tedesche scrisse: Higiene del raza, la asexualizzazion (sterilizzazione) de los psicòpatas, Nel 1937 scrive Eugenesia de la Hispainidad.
La razza spagnola avrebbe avuto una superiorità spirituale dovuta alla tradizione cattolica, all’innato patriottismo e la devozione al Caudillo contro ogni tentazione non solo marxista ma anche liberale e democratica che evocava la spettro della congiura massonico ebraica per dominare il mondo. Bisognava depurare la razza dal gene rosso del marxismo e dalla deficienza mentale da cui erano affetti gli avversari. Siamo di fronte come abbiamo visto in Argentina ad una psichiatrizzazione della dissidenza: la guerra civile diventa un’operazione di igiene mentale.
Lo psichiatra spagnolo scrive sotto l’influenza di Ramiro de Maetzu un filosofo che per giustificare l’operazione di Franco si riallacciava addirittura al decreto di Alahambra del1492 emanato da Ferdinando II di Aragona ed Isabella I di Castiglia rivolto ad evitare il contagio della razza ebraica.
Già allora il razzismo antisemita, presente anche in Argentina, faceva ricorso a un linguaggio medico.
Tutta la retorica nazionalista è una riedizione della retorica antisemita dell’Inquisizione che addirittura si vuole ripristinare. Della stessa natura era la retorica di Gimenez Caballero altro ideologo franchista, il quale non solo crea il mito del Caudillo ma usa l’espressione di bestia rossa, e di cancro per alludere ai repubblicani e al marxismo. Vallejo Nagera fa riferimento agli stereotipi falangisti e sfrutta la sua autorità di medico e psichiatria per avvalorare la tesi che la II repubblica e i suoi sostenitori sono espressione di una realtà subumana. Nel 38 Nagera riceve l’autorizzazione ad aprire un gabinetto di investigazione psicologica e bel 39 scrive Psiquismo del fanatismo marxista: investigaciones psicologica en marxista femininas delinquentes. Lo psichismo femminile diceva lo psichiatra spagnolo, ha molti punti di contatto con quello infantile e animale: una volta persi i freni inibitori e il controllo sociale esplode l’stinto femminile della crudeltà e si favorisco modalità di condotte perverse sia sul terreno politico che nell’esercizio della prostituzione . La colpa è del regime repubblicano che ha riconosciuto alla donna il diritto di essere libera: Il crimime delle donne repubblicane era di essersi occupate di politica o di aver svolto lavori pubblici come quello di infermiera, per soddisfare appetiti sessuali latenti, rifiutando il modello tradizionale della donna di casa, sottomessa e sacrificata guardiana dell’ordine familiare. La conclusione dell’indagine condotta su 50 donne appartenenti alle brigate internazionali, era che quest’ultime avevano delle stigmate degenerative quando non erano schizofreniche o psicopatiche delinquenti per effetto del cosidetto gene rosso. Ovviamente, a lo studio di Nagera era a favore del carcere, che avrebbe potuto avere un effetto rieducativo e della sottrazione dei figli delle delinquenti femminili, minacciati di essere costretti a vivere a contatto con persone. che favorivano l’insorgere di patologie psichiatriche. Rispetto al significato rieducativo del carcere per le repubblicane vedi la contronarrazione di Pilar Fidalgo in A young mater in Franco’s Prison dove racconta le atrocità cui venivano sottoposte le donne dai falangisti: torture stupri, bambini lasciati morire di fame o di meningite. La testimonianaza di Pilar è del tutto sovrapponibile, a parte le date a quello dei sopravvisuti del ESMA. Lo psichiatra Enrique Gonzalez Duro
ha scritto un libro su Le rapadas, le donne che per il solo fatto di essere compagne di repubblicani subivano il taglio dei capelli e costrette a bere olio di ricino e esporsi al pubblico ludibrio ricoperte di feci.
L’indagine storica ci consente di cogliere la motivazione originaria delle adozioni forzate, una pratica che verrà ripresa nell’operazione Condor e che in Spagna continuerà fino agli anni novanta, gestita da istituzioni religiose. La donne è un essere inferiore che fuori dal ruolo tradizionale nella famiglia cattolica non ha diritto e la capacità di essere madre: la sottrazione del bambino non solo è un abuso compiuto contro un essere indifeso ma è la privazione di una prerogativa la maternità, che può essere esercitata solo dentro il matrimonio religioso. La nascita senza il sacramenti o l’istituzione del matrimonio, scatena la percezione delirante e il giudizio di indegnità o di patologia mentale che si traduce nell’agire criminale di cancellare dalla vita del neonato la presenza della madre.
ll fenomeno delle adozioni forzate, che sono estremamente nocive sia per la madre che per il bambino, non è solo il risultato della sinergia fra integralismo cattolico e regimi totalitari per cui il crimine deriverebbe da una falsa interpretazione del cristianesimo di quest’ultimi. Negli stati terroristi totalitari la pratica dell’adozione forzata ha assunto un aspetto macrabo e persecutorio ma si è realizzata anche in altri contesti. In Irlanda le suore fino al 1996 hanno fatto sparire 40.000 bambini dati in adozione, dietro lauto compenso sottratti a donne che si erano concesse una libertà sessuale. Vedi il recente film Philomena. In Australia la Chiesa Cattolica ha chiesto scusa nel 2013 per 250000 adozioni forzate, realizzate anche con l’uso di psicormaci fra gli anni 50 e 70 con la complicità dello Stato e le istituzioni cattoliche Negli USA lo stato non sembrerebbe apertamente totalitario o terrorista : però dagli anni 40 agli anni 60 ha praticato la politica delle adozioni forzate. Una donna incinta, di razza bianca, non sposata grazie alla diagnosi degli psichiatri, in quel periodo sotto l’influenza freudiana, era considerata una malata di mente cioè una non madre. Veniva allontanata dalla famiglia e messa in istituzioni Maternal House gestite da associazioni cattoliche e dall’esercito della salvezza. Una volta partorito stava con il figlio circa tre settimane e poi agenzie autorizzate rispondevano alla grande richiesta di coppie sterili. Un neonato costava a quanto un’automobile, circa 15000 dollari. L’adozione forzata era considerata da psichiatri, assistenti sociali, rappresentanti delle corti di giustizia e volontari delle associazioni religiose, nonché dalla donna stessa e dalla sua famiglia una misura terapeutica. Liberatasi del bambino la donna poteva tornare alla normalità e alla prospettiva di una famiglia questa volta con la benedizione di figli.

A YOUNG MOTHER IN FRANCO’S PRISONS SENORA PILAR FIDALGO’S STORY 7:m writer o f this story is Seiiora Pilar Fidalgo Carasa, a governess. Fascists (Falan- gistas) arrested her in her house at Benavente on October 6th, 1936, and she was brought by Civil Guards to the headquarters of the Civil Govern- ment of Zamora, where her identity was estab- lished, and she was imprisoned. On entering the gaol she fainted; only eight days before she had been confined. She carried in her arms her newly-born infant-a little girl. Her only crime was that she was the wife of a Socialist, who was the friend and protector of Protestants, and whom the rebels had not been able to execute, nor even to arrest.
Mter seven months of imprisonment, Senora Pilar Fidalgo was exchanged, with all her family (her mother and her three children) against the family of Sr. Semprun ofValladolid. The exchange was not made without difficulty. Senora Fidalgo was kept in prison for more than a month after the arrival in the rebel zone of Sr. Semprun’s family, which had always been treated with consideration by the loyalists. T h e evidence o f Senora Fidalgo is therefore direct, free and personal. At this moment she lives in France and is ready, should it be necessary, to confirm her statements and give further details. The facts that she reports happened in Zamora, in the very heart of Castile. The town of Zamora numbers only 18,ooo inhabitants and, like all the province of which it is capital, has been since time immemorial a hotbed of reaction. Even after the establishment of the Republic in 1931, the ” Rights ” camouflaged under the name of “Agrarian Party,” maintained all their old power. The partisans of the Popular Front, far less numerous than in other regions, had to struggle with Sr. Cid, who since the Lerroux-Gil Robles Government in 1934, had been Minister and lived as cacique or ” political boss ” of the Province. 2
The evening before the military revolt of July 1936, the recently promoted Civil Governor received in his office some provincial electors and municipal councillors, whom he calmly assured that nothing would happen. The Colonel of the regiment in garrison at Zamora, the Lieut. Colonel of the Civil Guard, and the officer commanding the Assault-Guards reaffirmed to himtheirfidelitytotheRepublic. When,atdawn, some men of Benavente came to warn him of the clearly established duplicity of the military, the Governor refused to arm the people, as they asked of him, giving as his reason that Sr. Cid himself.- a few minutes before and in this very office-had condemned the rebellion and offered his services to the Government. By noon the following day, Zamora was already in the power of the rebels, and the Governor was condemned to death with Sr. Moreno Jover, Deputy of the Cortes; Sr. Salvadores, a former Deputy; Sr. Pertejo Sesena, who had been provincial delegate since the election of the President of the Republic; Manuel Anton, Secre- tary of the Workers’ Federation; and also some hundreds of republicans, who were murdered in cold blood throughout this furious persecution. 3
Of this persecution Senora Fidalgo tells in the pages which follow only what she herself has seen andwhathasbeentoldherbyeye-witnesses. Her account adds to what was already known of Franco’s White Terror a new note of cruelty. It is the imprisonment and the martyrdom of mothers in the Spanish “Nationalist” zone. I Prison Regime On my arrival in prison I was compelled to climb a narrow, steep staircase to a cell where there were already locked up about 40 other prisoners, and Iwasleftthereinahalf-faintingcondition. Under pretext of interrogation, I was obliged to climb up and down this staircase several times a day, which, because of my recent confinement and my weak state, brought on a severe hremorrhage. As I had not been allowed to bring any underwear for myself or my child, and there was neither mattress nor coverlet during the time of my imprisonment, I had to sleep on the cement floor- in midwinter also, when the climate of Zamora is one of the most rigorous in Spain. I en- deavoured to wrap up my child so that she would not suffer too much. Her hands and face turned s
blue with cold, because during these days the temperature in our cell fell four or five degrees below zero, and I had only a piece of blanket, which a companion had given me, to protect us from the bitter cold. At last I fell very ill, and risked asking the wardress (of whom I shall speak later) to call a doctor. Pedro Almendral was the name of the prison doctor. He came as a matter of form and, seeing my suffering, contented him- self with saying that the best method to be cured was to die. He prescribed nothing-either for myself or my baby. The wardress was called Teresa Alonso. Her daughter was Secretary to the Phalangist Party, and hence she had obtained the post of supervisor of the prisoners. She treated us with bestial brutality, overwhelmed us with the grossest insults and seized every opportunity of torturing us with refinements of cruelty. The prison regime was barbarous. Two days after my arrival I could not give my baby the breast, for all these emotions had dried up my milk. I was given every afternoon only a little cup of goat’s milk and water, which the child had to drink cold, for we were not allowed to make a fire. M y daughter fell i l l o f dysentry and 6
bronchitis. My companions in tribulation called her ” Miss Prison.” (We were 40 prisoners in a cell built to accommodate one person.) There were two benches to sit on, and there was the floor to sleep on. For our private needs there were only three chambers, which had to be emptied into a rusty old cauldron, a receptacle which also had to serve for washing our clothes. We were forbidden to have food brought to us from outside; and we were given disgusting soup cooked with soda. We were all in a deplorable state. In order to dry our washing we were not allowed to go into the yard, and so we had to spread it on the cement floor of the cell. Then we all squeezed ourselves into a corner so as not to walk on it. We begged the wardress at least to permit us to spread out our babies’ linen in the sun. She replied that we could dry it on ourselves: in fact, that is what we had to do, so that the infants should not suffer from the wet clothing. 7
II After five o’clock Anguish, indescribable anguish, arose within us when five o’clock came. Every day a new and frightful trial began with twilight. It was with horror we saw night fall; and we wished that the sun would never set. At eight or nine o’clock at night we all began saying good-bye to one another. Some tied up their bundle of personal belongings with the scraps of linen they possessed and used it for a pillow, as if they had tramped and rested for a last time on that final road which we foreshadowed. Some had already been parted from their jewels, ear-rings, wedding rings, religious medals and their little necklaces; they had given them to their relations through the bars of the interview cage, with messages for those soon to be orphans. One can guess with what 8
emotion these knick-knacks were received. Others who had not been visited gave up souvenirs of their domestic life-souvenirs of happy days- to those amongst us whom they thought would be the last to follow after them. For those who had a baby with them-and there were many (women who had been confined as recently as I were numerous) the first sign that they were to be taken to the executioner was when their infant was taken from them. All knew what this meant : a mother who had her little one taken from her had only a few hours to live. There were heart-rending scenes. T h e condemned mothers covered their little ones with kisses, pressed them for the last time to their bosoms; and it was necessary to tear them away by brute force from their mothers. Then the tears ceased. The women fell into a state ofsemi-consciousness, of absolute fixity and of frightening dumbness, having lost all idea of their surroundings. It was in this state that the poor women were led to their death. It happened every night. I have no recollection whatever of our being spared these dramatic scenes. In the profound silence that we kept, we first heard steps on the staircase, then steps in the corridor; and then the door was 9
opened. Civil Guards and Phalangists appeared, who read out names very slowly-with a torturing slowness. With the reading of the first name, anguish and terror seized all of us. Those who had been named took their kitbag, gave it to us, andaskedustoseethattheirpeoplegotit. Those who, once more, had not been named, uttered a sigh of relief at the thought that they had 24 more hours of assured life-a small concession that seemed to us a precious gift. In order to hear the list better, we held our breath and, so that our children should not cry, we gave them the breast. We who had to stay behind, fearing that the murderers would prolong their stay amongst us, begged the condemned ones not to delay their dressing. They knew, and we knew, that they were about to be killed and we were all in a hurry that the scene should come to an end; because if the victims claimed were slow in getting ready, the executioners hurled at us the grossest insults and threatened to take us all. The most tragic aspect of it was that the unfortunate ones who were going to die understood us very well and so went out quickly, some even without their shoes. However long, however full of change life may be, neither I nor any of the survivors shall ever forget those moments. 10
III The two worst nights The two most sinister nights that I passed in prison were those of October 9th and of December 13th, 1936. I still have them, and shall always have before my eyes, the terrible nightmares of those two nights. On October 9th the greatest number of my friends ofBenaventewerekilled. Therewere,withmany others whose names escape my memory for the moment, Epifanio Rodriguez Rubio, Felipe Mar- tinez Abad, Ildefonso Lopez, Enrique Villarino Santiago, Francisco Fernandez, Luciano Garcia Guerra, Marcelo Carbajo Lora. There was the son of a cobbler named Burgos who was only 19 years old, and Felix Vara, the painter Ibanez, Alejandrino Perez, Te6filo Infestas, and Vicente or Venancio Alonso. The wife of the last-named, II
Maria Garea, was imprisoned with us. They passed all the night of October 9th shut up in a hall of “Justice,” which served both as a torture chamber and as a chapel for the con- demned. It was also the place where we heard Mass. From our cell, grouped around the poor wife, we heard what was passing in that terrible waiting room when they came to find Maria Garea,whohadtoaccompanyherhusband. This was one of the farewell scenes at which I was present. Ishallneverforgetthemomentofdrama when this woman charged us (we who, perhaps, the next day would meet the same fate) not to abandon her children. T h e most tragic was to follow. We heard, when she had been conducted to the ” chapel ” where, with the other con- demned, she found her husband, the moans of the two as they embraced, now meeting for the first time since their imprisonment. The first and the last time. The moment of meeting was also the moment of parting. At dawn their bodies, clasped to each other, were thrown into a common pit.* The recollection of December 13th is no less tragic. It was said one day that some prisoners had plotted to escape. Sixty were chosen from 12
among them, because the Governor, who had been asked what punishment should be applied, had answered, it appeared, that they could not execute less than 50 of them. On December 13th, the 6o prisoners ‘were conducted to the famous hall of ” Justice ” near, as I have said, to our cell. Throughout a cold, clear night for five long hours we heard the grief-stricken cries of the martyred victims. We heard the lashings of thongs on flesh, and the wild insults of the executioners mixed with the shrieks o f the unfortunates and the thud of bodies thrown on the ground and against walls. There were hoarse and harsh wailings, others rising sharply like the cries of children suffering from meningitis. * With Vicente Alonso, husband of Maria Garea, were imprisoned among others Audelino Gonzalez Vila, Victor Calvo, Domingo Pedroso and his two brothers, Felipe Martinez Abad and Epifanio Rodriguez Rubio, Municipal Councillors, Enrique Villarino Santiago, journalist, Francisco Fernandez, baker, and his companion Jose Muiiiaga, who accompanied his wife Leonor Martinez Robles (who had been candidate for the Cortes), Modesto Rodriguez, employee in a pharmacy, Visitaci6n de Castro, wife of another Municipal Councillor, Vitaliano Barroso del Olmo, manufacturer and local chairman of the Republican Left Party, Marcelo Carbajo Lora, journalist, Alejandrino Perez, manufacturer, the painter Ibanez, Te6filo Infestas, a municipal workman, Ildefonso Lopez, manu- facturer and journalist, Pablo Santos, Felix Vara, Luis Fores, Luciano Garica Guerra, manufacturer, Cesareo Alonso and his sister,ofwhosetragicdeathwewillspeakoflater. Later,apractising Catholic was also imprisoned, the Mayor of the town, Alfredo Rodriguez Enriquez, who was to be condemned to 30 years imprison- ment, and who in April last was still in the prison of Zamora. Of all the above-mentioned, the lives of only Alfredo Rodriquez Enriquez, Leonor Martinez and Avelino Gonzalez were spared. 13
IV Masses and Sermons In the early morning Mass was said by the bishop himself. This took place only in excep- tional cases. Ordinarily, it was the priest who confessed the condemned and accompanied them to the place of execution-not in the least as a devout duty but in a spirit of “collaboration.,’ Statements of detained prisoners took place later from depositions in the course ofnew proceedings, and were the occasion of fresh arrests and fresh executions. I recall in connection with this that a priest, to whom the wardress compelled them to go, took it upon himself to speak with the prisoners. By his insidious questions this cleric extracted names and facts which he conveyed to the Phalangists. He even employed this procedure with those who were soon to be shot and whose 14
fear and proximity to death and the mystery of the great beyond inevitably inclined towards religion. Another exemplary priest was the one who said Mass. All his sermons were inflamed harangues against the “Reds.” He covered the republicans with insults and said to us that we were not imprisoned and to be killed because we were robbers, but because we were connected with men just as infamous. His imprecations were terrifying, and the most terrible curses came from his lips during the offertory. He refused absolution to one prisoner who was to be executed (Amparo Bara116n, of whom I will speak later) because she refused to declare that her husband was canaille. Such were the clergy who officiated at the last moments of the victims of the prre- torian revolt. As I said, it was the bishop who came on December 13th to the prison to celebrate Mass for the 6o prisoners who were to die. They were suffering from a night of torture, broken in body, their poor clothes in rags, bleeding martyrs. . . . In such conditions and in the presence of their executioners they were confessed, and exhorted to “die bravely.” It was in the same hall of ” Justice ” that the prisoners were led to hear Mass. Throughout the IS ‘
ceremony we had to kneel without turning our heads towards the chapel where the men.were. Behind us our gaolers kept guard over us. In this lugubrious spot, witness of so many martyr- doms and last sufferings, we often found small pieces o f paper on which were written by feverish and trembling hands words of farewell, in which were summed up a last vow or a final request. Onthefloorandagainstthosewallswere big splashes of fresh blood-blood vomited under bestial blows, by those who, some moments later, had found, in death, forgetfulness and the end of torture. Sometimes,thoughnotwithoutincurring great risks, we could gather up these papers. We carefully preserved (as in the cataco:rpbs were conserved the relics of the Christians thrown to the wild beasts) the relics of our new I?artyrs. 16
v Young women murdered I remember numerous cases worthy of being reported. Among others is that of Herminia de San Lazaro, a young woman 25 years of age and of great beauty. She was married and was a prisoner until the month of October. They gave her liberty shortly afterwards, but she fell seriously ill, either because the sufferings she had endured had enfeebled her, or the emotions she hadundergonehadtorturedhertoomuch. They accused her ofhaving thrown into the River Duero a statue of the Inquisitor Diego de Deza. For those who had established afresh the reign of the Holy Office that was a double crime. The clergy and the bigots ofthe province would not rest until Herminiawasimprisoned. Shewasdraggedfrom her sick bed, and again incarcerated. She entered 17
our cell at dusk and was for three hours a prey to intermittent attacks of epilepsy. That very night they took her to the cemetery and she was mur- dered. Herdeathwasdecreedtoavengeanoffence committed against a block of stone, the statue of one ofthe most notable among Spain’s Inquisitors. I should add also, apropos of this statue, that for a long time persons considered to be of the Left were obliged to search in the river where it had been thrown at the time of the Left electoral victory. The searches were in vain, but many people were drowned. The story of the Flechoso sisters is no less moving. They were brought in on a Sunday, the last Sunday of November, in the afternoon. One, Angelita, was aged 15 and the other 18. It tore one’s heart to see those two young girls, then ignorant of the fate awaiting them. We-did not think there would be any executions that day- generally they did not come on the Sunday to look for victims, and we wanted above all to persuade ourselves that no ill might befall the two children. We advised them to rest and to prepare for themselves on the floor a poor bed made with clothes and rags which we were able to lend them. They slept in each other’s arms 18
.and, for a while, we kept vigil over their innocent sleep. But towards nine o’clock the executioners came to look for them. One of the girls, very gentle in appearance, seemed on hearing the names to ask us what it signified and why they had been called. They dressed quickly, and the elder said to the younger, as she fondled her: “Take care, Angelita, if you do not feel well, lean on me.” We were so upset that we could scarcely say good-bye. They went down the staircase and then perhaps realized what end awaited them, for we heard their cries. The following day we learned that they had been killed together, clinging to one another. A month later an order came to set them free. I remember also some young girls of the Figuero de la Torre family. Serafina Figuero de la Torre, 15 years old, Aurelia Figuero de la Torre, 18 years old, and their mother, Maria de la Torre, are still in a dungeon as though they were dan- gerous criminals. The brother, a boy of 17 years, was killed, but the family does not know of his death. All the members of the Flechas family of Zamora, both men and women, have been killed : a total of seven persons. A young man, Transito Alonso, 19
succeeded in escaping alone but, in his place they killed his fiancee and her mother Juana R~os. They did the same with the family Camero : the mother, the two daughters and the fiance of one of them were all killed. A tailor named Silva, well-known in Zamora, was killed while his wife was in Toro. I could also cite innumerable families which were completely annihilated. lO
VI Sadism Julia Cifuentes, 25 years old, her mother Bal- domera Velado and Matea Luna Larma, sister of a Provincial Deputy, were brought to our . arms to be killed. Her mother soon followed. prison. They dragged Julia from her mother’s Matea was killed at the same time as Julia. The three women, accompanied by some girls, had been brought by the Phalangists from Villalpando in a motor lorry. The prisoners had to suffer all sorts of outrages, and some Phalangists even wished to violate them, while others went away with their companions. Another prisoner called Irene d’Almeida de Sayago told me herself that she had been brought to the prison in a motor lorry by Phalangists who attempted to outrage her. These scenes were very frequent. The 21
prisoners were considered by those who conducted them as spoils of war, and excesses were as terrible as they were common. I should like to cite with regard to this the case of a certain woman Eugenia, arrested by a man whom everybody knew and considered until then as normal, a lawyer, re- presenting the Conservative Party in Zamora, and named Segundo Viloria y Gomez Vilaboa. This individual arrested Eugenia, as he did hundreds of women-it was his speciality-and beat the unfortunate with such violence that when she entered our cell her body was black and her underwear stuck to her wounds. After this exploit he violated her. But he didn’t stop atthat. Whenhewasagainonguardintheprison, he once more sought out his victim, repeated his terrible acts; and the martyr came back to her gaol. Some weeks passed. Then one night the monster came again to look for Eugenia, led her to the cemetery and there assassinated her. Another case of sadism worth studying is that of an assassin named Mariscal. He went freely about Zamora and committed so many terrible crimes that even his accomplices were afraid. This Mariscal became one of the chief execu- tioners, by right of a long succession of atrocities 22
committed without regard to age, sex or the condition of the victims. These two murderers would make a fit study for psychiatrists. When we read the crimes of the monster of Dusseldorf with such indignation at the time, such disgust and shock, we were far from thinking that in our own country we should see even more terrible madmen emerge from among people whom we had considered normal. The fact is that there is no village, however tiny, in the rebel zone which has not its 10 or 12 criminals at least equal to the Dusseldorf monster; and many who surpass him in horror. To be imprisoned is (according to the rebels) to lose all individuality. The most elementary human right is unknown and men are killed as easily as rabbits used to be-in fact more easily, because formerly to kill a rabbit a hunting permit was necessary, whilst to kill people now you have only to go into the street and fire on them as a sort of diversion. To stress which I shall recall that the first three women murdered in the prison of Zamora were Engracia del Rio, governess at Fermosella, Carmen N – – , a young girl of 17, of great beauty, with lovely black hair, and Maria Salgado, of Zamora, widow and mother 23
of a small boy of seven years. These last two were led to the cemetery by a band of Phalangists who, once there, told them that they would allow them to run and that, if they succeeded in escaping, their lives would be spared. The two women were shocked but, at the same time, urged by the instinct of self-preservation, they ran madly from tomb to tomb, jumping over graves, hiding behind the crosses and the chapels. During this time the Phalangists, those ” young men of good family,” pursued and fired on them as though hunting. It was a night at the end of summer, and about eleven o’clock. Wounded, bleeding, victims of an incredible madness, the two women finally fell dead from the bullets of their hunters, the “Senoritas,”* who roared with laughter and went to recount their exploits at the casino and, on the following day, to take communion in the church of their parish, where a priest impatiently awaited them to congratulate them on the zeal they had shown in defence of” Holy Religion.” The chauffeur of a doctor very well known in Zamora, Dado Crespo Cerro, had succeeded in escaping to Portugal, but was arrested at Braganza by the Portuguese authorities, who delivered him * Seiiorito-a “young man about town.”
once again into the hands of the rebels. Before killing him they made him suffer the most terrible tortures. A woman prisoner was made to assist at one of those torturings, and she told me all about it. This woman was then feeding a child. The impression she experienced on seeing the unhappy chauffeur beaten by lashes, one ear tom off, his face all weals and cuts in many places, spouting blood from the nose, eyes, ears and mouth, was so strong that the baby she was feeding came out in septic abscesses all over its body. She begged that the baby might be looked after, but was refused. The poor woman was also killed; and the child taken to the hospital was no more than one great sore. I suppose it died there. In our cell a child died in our midst. It was there with its mother and grandmother-both prisoners. It had meningitis. It cried piercingly, and died without the doctor ever coming to see it, and withouthavingreceivedanyattention. Themother and the grandmother, who had done their best for it, were killed together-the day after the death of the infant. 25
VII u Justice” in Franco’s Spain If this is what women endured, what shall I say about men ? Every afternoon we saw in the yard the ” Division ” take place, which consisted in separating from the I ,coo odd prisoners a few dozen men destined to be delivered to their murderers the following night. Some had been condemned by those so-called ” Councils of War,” utter caricatures of tribunals, whose de- cisions were based only on the evidence of parish priests and the Commander of the Civil Guards. Judgments were based on the offence of” military rebellion ” ! The rebels accused those who had not joined their movement of the crime of which they themselves were guilty. Arbitrary tyranny and sadism showed themselves everywhere : the greater number of the victims of the division had not been tried. There was not even a pretence of considered judgment. 26
That, however, is without importance, for rebel justice does not stop at such details or lose itself in procedure. Those responsible for executions judge according to their pleasure, without any sort of control. How should it be otherwise ? In this place there is no authority which is not criminal, partly because the right of authority is in proportion to the 1percentage of alleged dilinquents, and partly because whoever does not kill would not know how to exercise the least authority over the murderers. The result of all this is that the ” judged ” prisoners are no better off than those who are not judged. It makes no difference whether one is at home or in prison. Any Phalangist, if he so wishes, can enter any house, compel any person to leave, take him or her openly and murder without any questioning. If a relation or friend of the victims wished to protest, he knew only too well that he would suffer the same fate. Therefore, over each crime there was a vast and profound silence which nobody dared to break. The rights of the in- dividual, the rights of humanity were ignored. Whoever entered the prison door knew that he would probably be murdered. Nor was he who stayed at home any more sure that he might not 27
be arrested during a family meal, or an hour after he had retired to bed. Amparo Barall6n, wife of the distinguished writer Ramon J. Sender, was murdered at dawn on October 12th, 1936. She had Andreita, her eight months old baby, with her. At six o’clock in the evening Justo, the administrator of the prison, entered her cell and dragged her child from her arms, saying, among other witticisms, that ” the Reds had not the right to nourish their children.” Amparo Barall6n, powerless to defend her child, struggling, weeping, a prey to in- describable madness, shrieked and, then weeping, wrote a farewell letter to Sender, a letter which I kept for a long time, but had to destroy later because of the continual searches to which we were subject. I know that in this letter she delivered her children to his care and held responsible one of his relations named Sevilla for the situation in which she found herself. When she had written this letter Amparo fainted and when she came to herselfshe remained in a state of semi-consciousness, crying aloud for her little girl. At night, they dragged her from the prison and led her to the cemetery where she was murdered.* * Her two brothers had already been murdered. 28
Teresa Adam, another woman, met the same fate. She was married to a Madrid journalist named Ignacio Alvarado. T eresa gave m e – a n d I have kept them-her wedding ring and some medals. She was a brave woman, very intelligent, well brought up and cultured; she was admirable in the face of death. I think that these examples suffice to establish in what form “Justice” is administered in the zone where Franco and his hired ruffians reign. In regard to crimes, let us consider pillage and organized theft especially in the villages. In the quiet hamlets of the province of Zamora, veritable depredations by the Phalangists take place. The men go to the farms, pillage granaries, arrest inhabitants, take money, cattle, fowls, empty the cellars and leave the house perfectly bare. I remember in the first days of the ” movement,” when I was still in my house at Benavente, I saw the sons of one of my neighbours (a doctor, Antonio Conde Hernandez) young rogues of about 16 years old, with guns slung on their shoulders. With sleeves turned back like workmen, they, who had never worked, recounted as though they attached no importance to their words, and as though they were speaking of the most ordinary 29
occurrences in the world, the thefts which they had committed in the neighbouring villages, frightening by their childishly bellicose attitude (which, as experience taught, was terribly tragic) forcing peaceful labourers to give up all that was imperiously demanded, and making·the workers testify their enthusiasm for the ” Cause and the Crusade.” These good-for-nothings who made themselves hoarse with shouting,” Spain, Imperial, One, Great,” took back all sorts of victuals to their homes, where they shared them merrily- foodstuffs which were at once eaten at joyous feasts, shared by their relations, their oldest friends-those former proud defenders of “the sacred rights of property,” those very same people who had designated as theft the Republic’s plans for Agrarian Reform. The right of property had been abolished. Even the dead are not respected. Corpses are stripped meticulously of all that is of the least value. I can cite, having heard the account in the prison, the case of Sr. Zuloaga, a barrister and jurisconsult, eminent in Leon, who was murdered near that town and whose body was discovered absolutely naked. Sr. Zuloaga was a striking personality in local society; and kept himself apart from all political activity. He was actually of rather conservative tendencies. 30
They murdered in the province of Zamora about 6,000 persons; 6oo of them were women. There is not a village, however small or isolated, which has not known Phalangist crimes. On the roads, in the meadows, in the fields, under the trees and in the thickets of the mountains, everywhere- for months and months-bodies appeared : some were left as they were murdered, others were disinterred by animals from graves hastily dug by the murderers. Towns and villages became places of silence; and suburbs places of mourning. Widows and orphans still alive and free have had to hide their grief for fear of being killed. They begged secretly, because anyone who helped the widow or orphans of a ” Red ” exposed him or herself to being shadowed. Only the Social Assistance which has been or- ganized is able to allay material suffering, but even then it is by imposing moral suffering : obliging orphans to sing the songs of the murderers of their father; to wear the uniform ofthose who have executed him; and to curse the dead and to blas- pheme his memory. At last here I am safe. I have been saved, a little by chance but mainly through the working of the lawsofwarwhich make hostages a rateofexchange. 31
It is like a resurrection for me to find myself out of prison, free from all oppression and sure of never being replunged into barbarism. But I hold in my heart the sad images of those 200 interminable nights of nightmare. Nightmares that were not dreams-but undeniable reality. That reality was and remains, because, although once more I breathe as a free woman, in our cell pass to and fro some 40 women, endlessly suffering indescribable torture, while thousands of men are crammed in the halls, passages and court-yard, and await the fall of day to light them to the slaughter- house and the common grave into which their entangled bodies will be thrown. In my liberty I am still one with them, as I was when I was in prison, and to this day I share their sufferings. What else can I do for them but denounce the cruelty of their executioners ? If the state of being human is made up of respect for right, 9f love for one’s neighbour and of liberty, there are in the prisons of Franco thousands of beings whose sole hope is to be able one day to be called men again.

Gli eventi delittuosi, in particolar modo gli omicidi ed il presunto figlicidio di cui tanto sentiamo parlare in questi giorni a proposito del bambino Loris trovato tragicamente strangolato in una campagna del ragusano , oltre che fatti di cronaca sono importanti argomenti di indagine scientifica. E’ giusto pertanto che se ne parli e che l’opinione pubblica venga informata con l’aiuto di esperti. Però quando ci troviamo di fronte alla volontà di sfruttare una curiosità morbosa per particolari macabri speculando sul dolore e sulla malattia, il diritto-dovere di informazione rischia di divenire una vera e propria necrofilia mediatica. Il morto fa più notizia del vivo: è questo un tema su cui vale la pena di riflettere.. Nella trasmissione di Vespa “Porta a porta” che si occupava del caso di Ragusa abbiamo visto un cameramen di notte seguire la madre di Loris che insieme al marito andava a deporre un mazzo di fiori nel luogo del ritrovamento del cadavere. Ne è scaturita una violenta reazione di un familiare: la ripresa che cosa aggiungeva alla comprensione del caso a parte esibire la frantumazione psicologica della donna che mostrava un lutto che non sappiamo quanto possa essere vero? Fra gli esperti, che intervengono sugli eventi di cronaca nera per ore su tutte le reti, spiccano figure come l’ex massone dottor Meluzzi autore di un libro “Cristoterapia”
scritto insieme a Don Gelmini passato alla storia anche per la sua frequentazione delle patrie galere oltre che per essere gravato dal sospetto di abuso su minori mai fugato anche perché non si è riusciti, per il suo decesso, a portare a termine il processo in cui era imputato. Nel “caso Ragusa “ Meluzzi vorrebbe che fosse approfondita la pista dell’abuso sessuale (!) e parla di Veronica Panarello come una donna “fragile” e un po’ pazza alla quale non si dovrebbe attribuire tutto l’onere della colpa. E’ chiaro che la donna in questione comunque si sia svolta la tragedia, non è solo fragile o un po’ pazza ma gravemente ammalata come testimoniano i due tentativi di suicidio in età adolescenziale o più in generale i dati biografici.
E’ interessante il fatto che l’uccisione di Loris occupi le pagine dei giornali ed i palinsesti delle televisioni insieme al cosiddetto “sacco di Roma”caratterizzato dalla speculazione sulla pelle degli emigrati, soggetti ideali, come i bambini, per subire abusi e violenze. Fa notizia la sofferenza della povera gente, dei soggetti marginali sia per estrazione sociale che per caratteristiche psicologiche. Su di essi vive e si arricchisce una pletora di giornalisti, di commentatori a tempo pieno in un contesto sociale e culturale in cui lo sfruttamento di masse di diseredati , la pedofilia e la violenza sulle donne che spesso ha come esito inevitabile la morte sembra avere il privilegio delle prime pagine per l’orrore e la curiosità morbosa che suscita. La curiosità fa vendere molte copie ed innalza gli indici di ascolto. La necrofilia mediatica e la sua irresistibile attrazione per “il negativo”, funziona da cinghia di trasmissione e di amplificazione della necrofagia politica di una classe dirigente che spreca e saccheggia le risorse pubbliche nel contesto di un’economia agonizzante. Su tutti sembra trionfare la Chiesa cattolica, come ha affermato in recenti interviste Fausto Bertinotti liquidando così tutta l’eredità storica della sinistra, con un’ antropologia al cui centro c’è “l’essere per la morte”. Dal fallimento della politica che si consuma nel suicidio di massa dell’astensionismo elettorale, dall’inasprimento delle condizioni di vita di milioni di persone dovuto alla responsabilità di tutta la classe dirigente che si genuflette come il sindaco Marino di fronte al papa, si avvantaggia l’apparato istituzionale ed ideologico del Cristianesimo che aumenta a dismisura i profitti (vedi gli ultimi bilanci dello Stato Vaticano) ed amplifica la propria presenza mediatica su scala planetaria. La Chiesa prospera nel degrado, nella sofferenza e nella malattia di cui si è sempre nutrita e che ha usato come un deterrente psicologico contro ogni tentativo di trasformazione e di autonomia dell’uomo che prescindesse dalla trascendenza e dalla soggezione del sacro. La mentalità religiosa, il culto dei morti è alla base della necrofilia mediatica di chi ci dà in pasto per giorni e giorni ben oltre il dovere dell’informazione, l’orrore di una madre che uccide il proprio figlioletto, e della necrofagia economica e politica del sacco di Roma che viene presentata come il tratto prevalente ed inevitabile di ogni prassi politica. I fatti di cronaca vengono riportati, selezionati ed amplificati quasi a suggerire che al di là di ogni modificazione possibile della storia e della società, ciò che riemerge sempre è la natura perversa e criminale dell’uomo.
Proporrei una riflessione su “Cappuccetto rosso”. Il mondo è pieno di lupi cattivi pronti a sedurre e violentare delle povere fanciulle. Church leaders admit to knowing about scheme in which single mothers were pressured to give up their newborns for adoption

The Catholic church in Chile is under investigation over allegations that priests played a central role in a network that stole newborn babies from single mothers.
Police investigators are now probing dozens of cases in which unmarried women who became pregnant were pressured by priests to give up their child for adoption. Those who refused were anaesthetised during delivery and, upon awakening, told that the child had died. The healthy babies were hidden from their biological mothers and given away in order to be raised by married couples in “traditional” Catholic families.
Church leaders now admit they have known about the network for at least 10 years. Unlike in Spain and Argentina, where babies were stolen from families considered to be too poor or too subversive to raise the children well, the motivation in Chile was to shield the reputations of well-off families from the social stigma of unmarried motherhood.
Most of the cases now being investigated date from the 1970s and 1980s, but some were reported in 2005.
Chile’s child protection agency – Sername – has now opened an investigation and is working with detectives to determine how many children are involved.
Documents from the Sername investigation describe how parents were tricked into believing that their baby had died.
Matias Troncoso, 33, a well-known Chilean photographer, was one such baby. Troncoso always knew he was adopted, but when he began asking questions about his biological mother, the answers did not add up. His birth was not registered until he was six years old, and the clinic where he was born refused to release his records.
The doctor who delivered him was losing his memory, but enough details leaked out that Troncoso began to suspect a plot.
Last month his suspicions were confirmed when Chilean investigative news site Ciper reported the allegations. In a series of online articles, the collective’s reporters tracked down and documented an underground network of wealthy families, gynaecologists, social workers, lawyers and, at the heart of the scheme, Gerardo Joannon, a gregarious and popular priest.
Troncoso, who ended up as the single son of a loving, upper-class family, had nothing but praise for his adoptive parents and said they never hid the fact that he was adopted. But he was extremely critical of the role played by the church. “They had funerals with empty caskets,” he said.
Father Joannon has admitted working with 10 doctors who helped coordinate the adoptions. “A young single woman who had a baby was looked at very badly,” he said when confronted by Ciper reporters in March. “I wouldn’t say it scrubbed out their life, but it was something close to that. Nobody wanted to marry them.”
Joannon insists his role was limited. He told Ciper: “The only thing I did was put [the pregnant young women] in contact with a doctor who made the effort to find families that were desiring to have a child.”
Interviewed by a Chilean TV crew, Joannon declared, “I am not going to help [the investigation] with anything, I have nothing left to say.” Church officials then announced that Joannon has been ordered to refrain from speaking further about the cases, which investigators now believe involves six Santiago-area hospitals.
Father Joannon insists he only participated in underground adoptions in which the biological mother agreed to “donate” the baby to a second family. But at least one mother has said he pressured her to give up her child, and alleges that when she refused, he participated in the disappearance of her newborn daughter. A second mother described Joannon stalking the maternity ward, pressuring her to hand over her newborn.
Several other priests are alleged to have been involved in the scheme, but have not been named.
Catholic leaders in Chile have distanced themselves from Joannon. His weekly mass was suspended in April and Alex Vigueras, a spokesman for the church said it was clear that the babies were taken without consent. “What I find most troubling is to have said that the children died, knowing that it was not the case.”
Vigueras said that Joannon and the baby-snatching ring had “committed an injustice … various rights have been violated.” In a communiqué from the church, Vigueras promised to collaborate with investigations by Chilean law enforcement agencies.
A website set up by victims has logged dozens of alleged cases. Some of the inquiries come from parents looking for their children and others from children looking for their parents.
“Joannon made the contacts but he is just one lead on this problem,” said Arturo Fellay, whose wife is searching for her biological parents. “There are many other cases of boys and girls who were said to be dead and were taken away or given or sold to families under a secret that was kept for years.”
Asked about the ethics and honesty of holding funeral services for newborn children who in fact were alive, Joannon told reporters from Ciper, “I never held a funeral mass … these were masses where thanks were given to God for that day in which the young woman made such a tremendous sacrifice.”
Pressed with evidence by parents that funeral services were indeed held, Joannon then said he was “sure that [the baby] was dead. The doctor told me [the baby] was dead.”
Troncoso, the photographer who is now searching for his biological mother wants answers. “I don’t know my birthday. I don’t know my [biological] mother” he said. “These woman entered the clinic. They were put to sleep and when they woke up were told ‘Your baby has died.’ Basically it was kidnapping.”
Troncoso says he is not interested in filing criminal charges. “Justice is not just the whip of vengeance,” he said. “It’s essentially about truth. How can you take a baby from a mother and convince yourself that you are doing a good deed?”
